Message for Sunday September 27, 2020
This Week Reading: Acts 1:12-14
Sermon Notes
I. I. God’s Prayer Tool Number
One: Difficulties, Obstacles and Opposition - verse 12 - In verse 12 the followers of Jesus return to Jerusalem - this was a dangerous place for them to go as followers of Jesus and they had previously left Jerusalem.
Key Concept: God’s call and promise is always tested by the trials of life
Key Verse: Luke 18:1 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.
Community Group
Application: Being part of a community group is essential if you are going to
stand firm – you cannot stand alone.
II. God’s Prayer Tool Number Two: Waiting - verse 13 - In verse 13 they go to the upper room to wait.
Key Concept: God has us wait so our hearts will change and we desire Jesus more than what we are waiting for
Key Verse: Psalm 40:1 - I waited patiently for the Lord;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
Community Group
Application: Community Group members make gathering together in good times and
in difficult times a priority
III. God’s Prayer Tool Number Three: Praying with Others - verse 14 - In verse 14 they are all together in unity praying
Key Concept: United prevailing prayer is the bridge that brings the promise of the Holy Spirit power into a reality in our lives
Key Verse: Ephesians 6:18 - And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
Community Group Application: God is waiting for a family, a community group, a church who will unite in prayer so He can pour out His Spirit upon them.
Crossroads Community Group Guide:
A. Welcome: Welcome everyone especially new persons and read out loud the purpose of your group
B. Purpose: Our purpose is to spread the Kingdom of God. We do this by multiplying groups of people who care for each as God's family. We begin by inviting new people to our group and building them to be followers of Jesus. Each person here has the potential to be empowered to start and be the leader of a new group and spread God's kingdom.
C. Worship Time: Spend a few minutes singing a worship song. Here is one you may want to use Bless the Lord (or pick your own on YouTube make sure it has the lyrics on the screen)
2. Who did you invite to the group for this week?
F. Opening Question (a simple question to introduce the main theme - called an icebreaker):
G. Read Background Information:
The followers of Jesus have been given a promise by Jesus that they would receive power from the Holy Spirit to accomplish the task of building the Kingdom of God throughout the world. Before they receive it they have to wait in Jerusalem. They all gather together in an upper room of a house and join together in praying and seeking God. God desires to fill us with His Spirit but we must desire and hunger for God to be filled with His power. The bridge between the promise of the power of the Holy Spirit and the filling with the holy Spirit is united prayer. Some other verses that use the same word - constantly in prayer or devoted to prayer are Acts 2:42; Acts 6:4; Romans 12:12; Colossians 4:2. Jesus told a story about this in Luke 18:1
H. Word: Read Acts 1:!2- 14 - break it down into smaller portions to read. Read it in portions aloud together several times. (Goal is that everyone understand the Bible story or verses by retelling them in their own words - keep at it until everyone knows the story or verses)
1. What key (important) words do you see in these verses?
2. Tell in your own words what happens in these verses.
3. What are the details?
4. What details can you add to what others in the group have said?
I. Discuss the following general questions together (Goal is to use these general questions to guide a discussion - the leader should not speak more than 30% of the time - let the group discover what God is saying to them).
1. What new thing did you discover in the story or verses that you did not know before?
2. What did you learn about God (Father, Jesus or Holy Spirit) from the story?
3. What do you learn about people from the story?
J. Commitment - Obedience - Application (This is the key - have everyone answer this question):
1. What in specific will you commit to apply in your life from this study?
K. Prayer Time:
1. Pray for an empty chair representing new people who you want to join your group. Name names of people specifically.
2. Pray for the needs of the members of the group. It is best to divide into 2 groups one of male and the other female.
L. For Next time:
1. Ask each person the name of a person they will invite to the group for next week.
